MYSPACE: A Risograph Exhibition Recent work from Purdue Art + Design Dept.’s AD220: Computers in Art Class On Nov. 5, from 6-8pm, the Bindery Artist Studios will open MYSPACE, an exhibition of Risograph prints created by the Fall 2021 Computers In Art class in the Art + Design Department of Purdue University. The exhibition will be part of the November First Friday Events staged across downtown Lafayette, organized by the Tippecanoe Arts Federation. As part of a class assignment, the 13 artists whose work is on view in this exhibition created digital imagery through a variety of techniques and processes. The files were emailed to Oddities Prints a commercial print studio based in Kansas City, who printed the imagery in small editions using their risograph machine. The results of this collaboration are the 13 prints on view in MYSPACE. The title of this exhibition refers not only to the early-2000s social media platform, but also to the theme of the prints themselves: for this project, all 13 artists in the Computers in Art class created imagery related in some way to the theme of “space.” Risograph printing is a mechanical alternative to screenprinting, in which colored layers of ink are spot-printed onto paper. The Riso machine internally creates a stencil that is laid onto a drum filled with ink, which then spins at high speed and forces the ink through the stencil onto paper. The riso process creates a uniquely textured print that cannot be replicated. The Risograph resembles in some ways a Xerox machine, although unlike other forms of printing it is not restricted to the use of Cyan, Magenta, Yellow or Black colors: rather, a wide range of idiosyncratic colors can be used for expressive possibilities. The artists included in this exhibition are Brooklynn Cox, Long Dao, Ryann Davis, J-Matt Gay, Alisen Glidden, Angel Gonzalez-Quintana, Brady Hawks, Teiko Johnson, Danielle Morales, Grace Poukey, Kenneth Price, Elaine Shen, and Lauren West. The instructor for the course and curator of this exhibition is Brian Hitselberger. The Bindery Artist Studios are located at 511 Ferry Street, Lafayette, IN. The exhibition will be open to the public during the reception hours of 6-8pm, Friday November 5th and will remain on view by appointment for the month of November.
