Biography
Angela Vinson (LaLa) an artist since the ol' pushing crayons around days; works from her studio in Lafayette, Indiana creating painting, prints, sculptures, pottery, handbags, and more.
Her work first began as an exploration with the elements and principles of design and figures began to emerge. She communicates people, community, togetherness, isolation, and journeys in her work.
LaLa began her college studies as an art education major, but was soon drawn into the clay studio. After her sophomore year she committed to ceramics and received her BFA from Herron School of Art. LaLa spent a year at Purdue University pursuing her MA in ceramics and decided teaching was her passion, and received her MA in secondary education from Indiana Wesleyan University in 2007. In May 2008 LaLa opened LaLa Gallery & Studio, and has been a full time teacher, curator, event organizer, and working artist ever since.
The Bindery is a great space where she is excited to have a separate studio to paint and print in from her messy clay studio at LaLa.
Artist Statement
I progressively create taking in happenings around me by observing details in everything; shadows, shapes, the rhythm of steps, architecture, conversations, relationships, and the journey of my day-to-day. I often daydream by imagining lines that would be created by people walking through their routines (if they had paint on their shoes), and how those lines cross each other but the people are disconnected. I take the observations and turn them into images that make up my visual vocabulary in the environments that I create on canvas, board, paper, clay, or fabric. Each expressive environment has a touch of religious codes, order, chaos, hiding places, windows, doors, and portals to escape in or journey to.
I have lived and worked downtown for over 7 years, I travel to Chicago and Indianapolis on a monthly basis and these urban images have filtered into my work. The matrix series is a more clear expression of happenings and observations around me. A matrix is an environment where something develops. We are all in a matrix developing relationships, memories, conversations, and experiences. I have been on a matrix kick for several years now, and I am continuing to create my abstract matrix environments.
We are all webbed together but act so distant from one another.
