Artist Statement
As an artist, I enjoy the vivid color and deep contrast elicited by mediums such as colored pencil and oil paint. My work often includes detailed studies of still-life objects, portraits, and surreal landscapes.
I am fascinated by light and shadow, and my work is inspired by how these two work together. From a very early age, exploring these conflicting elements in artwork has been how I managed to make sense of them in life: happy times balanced with difficult times, light next to dark - sometimes blended with a soft edge, and sometimes not.
My goal for most of the work I create is for the viewer to have an emotional understanding of the balancing of the elements: the lighting, subtlety, and intentionality of the mark-making and color choices.
Biography
I am an artist based in Lafayette, Indiana. After spending a number of years teaching high school visual art in the public school system, I have developed a deeper passion for art and design as a creator. My work involves experimenting in drawing, painting, graphic design, photography, as well as occasional ceramics.
When I’m not developing my own artwork, going for a swim, looking at antiques, or visiting a museum, I coordinate the marketing and events as well as design graphics at the Art Museum of Greater Lafayette.
